new york canyon, nevada
The New York Canyon Prospect is located 20 miles southeast of Colado and 30 miles northeast of Salt Wells. The prospect was initiated early based on its structural setting, apparent hydrothermal history, and elevated temperatures encountered, e.g. steam was reported to issue from a 140’ deep well in 1963. At least three oil & gas companies conducted geothermal exploration during the late 1970s and early 1980s in the area.
An estimated $4.4 million of prior exploration work was completed in the area. Dr. Jim Combs estimated the New York Canyon area can produce 82 MW to 163 MW.
At New York Canyon areas of intense alteration and leaching are associated with deposition of silica and other minerals. Soil geochemical surveys identified strong structurally controlled anomalies.
About 4 miles to the north of the Vulcan leases is an existing 69 kV transmission line.
